Discover Bathurst: The Unexpected Treasure of New South Wales

Having lived in Sydney for most of my 50 (ish) years, it was only recently that I stepped off the beaten path and discovered the charm of Bathurst. With its historic architecture, quaint cafes, and friendly locals, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Bathurst offers a unique and authentic Australian regional experience. Taking a stroll through the town’s streets and park, I discovered beautiful sights around almost every corner. From boutique shops and art galleries to heritage architecture, there’s plenty to explore in Bathurst. Here are 5 reasons to visit Bathurst:

1. Vibrant Food and Wine

Bathurst has a surprisingly vibrant food and wine scene to indulge your taste buds. Whether you’re craving a hearty pub meal, a gourmet dining experience, or a casual cafe brunch, Bathurst has something for everyone. With an abundance of local produce and talented chefs, you’ll be spoiled for choice.  Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of wine from one of the region’s many vineyards for the ultimate dining experience.

Alternatively, drop into Reckless Brewing Company to taste some uniquely flavoured beers over a pizza and trivia night.

If you’re keen on some unpretentious but delicious food options here are a few places I have enjoyed:

  • The George Hotel – more than a pub, offering great food from their modern Australian menu (and comfortable, budget accommodation too)
  • Church Bar – tasty woodfired pizza from converted 1850’s church, with pumping music later in the night
  • B Town BBQ at The Oxford  – southern style dining, texas BBQ low and slowly cooked meats with great service in a relaxed and fun environment
  • Sweet Caramel cafe – enjoyed a relaxed lunch in here a couple of times, with a menu that has something for everyone
  • Drake and Duck Cafe – part of The George Hotel, only open to 12 noon for breakfast or early brunch, serving great coffee
  • Rockabilly Cafe – greasy but tasty, american food with huge portions in small 50’s diner themed surroundings (and conveniently located across the road from The George Hotel)

2. Motorsport Enthusiasts’ Dream

Rev up your engines and head to Bathurst, home of the iconic Mount Panorama Circuit. Motorsport enthusiasts from around the world flock to Bathurst to witness thrilling races and events throughout the year. Whether you’re a fan of V8 Supercars, motorcycle racing, or classic car shows, Bathurst has something for every petrolhead. Don’t miss the opportunity to drive the legendary Mount Panorama circuit yourself and experience the adrenaline rush firsthand. Just watch your speed, as there are speed cameras and police regularly patrolling to make sure you don’t break any race records – or speed limits, for that matter.

There’s also a great museum worth visiting. Even if you’re not a revhead but don’t mind admiring the odd classic vehicle or piece of history you will enjoy this trip down memory lane.

3. Accessible Destination

Conveniently located just a few hours’ drive from Sydney, Bathurst is an easily accessible destination for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation. Whether you choose to drive, take a train, or fly into Bathurst’s regional airport, getting to this charming town is a breeze. We have even ridden there on our two wheeled vintage Lambrettas a couple of times. Once you arrive, you’ll find plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget, from cozy bed and breakfasts to luxury hotels. However, if you’re planning a visit during peak events – book early as they fill up quick.

Driving from the northern beaches of Sydney it’s just over 3 hours taking the scenic Bells Line of Road. It takes a little longer if you stop at Bilpin to stretch your legs and pick your own apples or try some local cider (not too much if you’re driving!)  If you are coming from central or western Sydney, head up the Great Western Highway through Penrith and the Blue Mountains, stopping at Katoomba or the Hydro Majestic for a coffee or high tea; or coming from the South detour through Oberon and try one of their cafes or bakeries. No matter which way you travel, you will be rewarded with spectacular views along the way. Though if driving and it’s wet, watch out for those winding roads! Oh and pay attention to the speed cameras! I got caught last time, fortunately only a minor offence so the ticket didn’t break the bank and was only 1 demerit point.

4. Stunning Natural Beauty

Speaking of spectacular views, be prepared to immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of Bathurst and its surrounding countryside. From rolling hills and lush forests to sparkling rivers and tranquil lakes, Bathurst is a paradise for nature lovers. Take a hike in the nearby Blue Mountains National Park, go for a swim in the Macquarie River, or simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking views from Mount Panorama. No matter what outdoor adventure you choose, Bathurst’s natural beauty will leave you in awe. Though in winter don’t forget to layer up – it gets very chilly!

If you decide to venture further west to visit Orange or Mudgee, you will find views in abundance. Don’t be afraid to take a less travelled B road for some quieter, more remote views. You may even stumble across the odd art silo mural, as we did in Portland when searching for the Capertee Valley, which ranks alongside the Grand Canyon in Arizona as one of the largest canyons in the world. Unless you are driving after dark. Then be very afraid! If the oncoming headlights on pitch dark roads don’t dazzle you to almost blindness, or the unseen potholes /bumpy roads don’t rock you to the core, then dodging roos or other wildlife will certainly be a good heart starter!

5. History and Culture

Bathurst has a rich history and vibrant culture to be uncovered as you explore its museums, galleries, and heritage sites. You can learn about the town’s indigenous heritage, colonial past, and modern-day traditions through interactive exhibits and guided tours. Visit the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery to admire local artwork, explore the Abercrombie House, stroll through the Rail Museum to step back in time, or attend one of the town’s many cultural festivals and events. With a history dating back over 200 years, Bathurst has a story to tell around every corner.

In summary, whether you’re a foodie, a rev-head, a nature photographer, or a history buff, Bathurst has something to offer everyone. Plan your trip to this unexpected treasure of New South Wales and discover all that Bathurst has to offer. From vibrant food and wine to motorsport excitement, accessible travel options, stunning natural beauty, and a rich history and culture, Bathurst is a destination you won’t want to miss!
